Network Neighborhood

Advice for Server Administrators

Network Neighborhood

Disclaimer: Network Neighborhood is not officially supported by ResNet and anything found on Network Neighborhood does not necessarilly represent the goals or ideals of ResNet or the University of Rochester. In Addition, Network Neighborhood does not work with all computers.

Step 1 Network Icon Click on the Start --> Settings --> Control Panels. Then, double-click on the Network icon. In the configuration window there is a box labeled The following network components are installed: which contains all of the components currently installed on your computer. In order for Network Neighborhood to function properly several components must be present. Check to see if the following components are installed:
Network Panel

  • IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol
  • NetBEUI
  • TCP/IP

Many ethernet cards add Client for Microsoft Networks and Client for Netware Networks. These are two different services and are not interchangeable. ResNet does not use Netware Networks for Network Neighborhood, but if it is installed it will not affect Network Neighborhood. If Client for Netware Networks is already installed just leave it alone.

Step 2 Network Icon If the aforementioned components are not installed you must add them manually. NOTE: You will need your windows 95/98 OS files available on your hard drive, on diskettes or on CD.

Click the Add button, then in the Select Network Component Type window that will pop up select Protocol as the type of network component you wish to install, then again click Add.
Network Icon

In the Select Network Protocol window that will pop up select Microsoft as the manufacturer, then select IPX/SPX as the network protocol and then click the OK button. Repeat this process to add NetBEUI and TCP/IP using Microsoft as the manufacturer in all cases.

Once you have completed the above, click the OK buttons to exit TCP/IP Properties and Network. Windows will ask you to restart the computer. You will need to restart to have the changes take effect.

NOTE: Do not close the windows by clicking on the "X." This will cancel the installation of TCP/IP and will need to be redone.

Step 3 Network IconIt is time to decide what you want others to have access to.

In the Network Control Panel there is a button labelled file and print sharing. Clicking on it brings up a new window that has two boxes labelled I want to give others access to my files and I want to give others access to my printer(s).

To enable file sharing check the first box. To enable remote printer access check the second box. Click the OK button and Windows will update your files and prompt you to restart the computer in order for the changes to take effect.

NOTE: If you have Windows 98 you must check the first box for Network Neighborhood to work.

Step 4 Network Icon Click on the Start Button --> Settings --> Control Panels. Then, double-click on the Network icon.

To give yourself an identity on Network Neighborhood click on the Identication tab (located at the top of the network control panel window). This is where you choose your computer's name and workgroup.

NOTE: The name can be anything, as long as it is not already in use by another computer on the network. If this is the case, when Windows starts up, an error message will say your computer name is already in use on the Network. Change the name of your computer as explained above to avoid getting that message in the future.

The workgroup can also be anything. If you choose a workgroup name that is already in use you will be grouped with those computers.

Step 5 Network Icon Double-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop.

NOTE: If you do not see the Network Neighborhood icon Client for Microsfot Networks has not been installed.

The initial list of computers are the computers in your workgroup. One of the computer names should be your own. Double-clicking on the Entire Network should bring up the rest of the Network Neighborhood workgroups.

NOTE: If the only icon shown when Network Neighborhood is opened is Entire Network then Network Neighborhood is not functioning properly.

Step 6 Sharing Icon Network Neighborhood allows you to share the following things:
Folders
Hard Drives
CD-ROM Drives
Printers
Removeable storage devices

To share any file it must be in a folder. To share a folder Right-click on the folder you want to share. Then Left-click on Sharing from the menu.

Click on the circle next to shared as to share this folder.

You can and should password protect this folder. Read-Only means that the files can be remotely copied only. Full Access means a remote user may move, copy, delete, or send files to this folder.

NOTE: ResNet highly recommends password protecting all shared items as protection against unauthorized users.

NOTE: Only share Hard Drives if you want remote access to the entire contents of that Hard Drive.

NOTE: If you are unsure about what is shared on your computer open Network Neighborhood and double-click on your own computer. A window will open showing all shared items on your computer.
