Advice for Server Administrators

Server Administration

Servers are computers running programs that respond to information requests over the network from other computers. A common example is a World Wide Web server, which sends Web pages to a Web browser such as Netscape. Other examples of servers include Macintoshes with File Sharing turned on and linux-based computers providing login access.

ResNet allows server programs running on your computer to be reached from other computers. If you choose to run server programs, you take on the responsibility to ensure that users of your server observe the ResNet Acceptable Use Policy. For further information, read the Advice to ResNet Server Administrators.

If you want to run TCP/IP-based server programs on your computer, you will probably want to have a static IP address and host name assigned to your computer, so that it is easy for other users to find your computer from the Internet.
