Frequently Asked Questions

What is ResNet?
ResNet is the residential computing networking on River Campus at the University of Rochester. ResNet allows students access to email, and the internet from the comfort of their room through a medium called Ethernet.

At the University of Rochester our Ethernet network uses a T3 connection which is faster than any phone line or cable connection. In short this means web pages load quicker, downloading takes less time improving student productivity and satisfaction.

What Buildings Have ResNet?
All undergraduate residential buildings have ResNet including Dekeiweit and Valentine Towers. The complete list is shown below.
Anderson Burton Chambers
Crosby Drama House Fairchild
Gale Gannett Gates
Gilbert Hoeing Hollister
Kendrick Lovejoy Medevil House
Morgan Munro Quad Annex
Slater Tiernan Wilder

How Much Does ResNet Cost?
The cost associated with ResNet is incorporated into the cost of housing.

What Computers Does ResNet support?
ResNet supports all computers that meet the minimum configuration

Does ResNet Use DHCP?
Yes. ResNet uses (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) DHCP. Computers using ResNet do not use proxies and are not behind any fire walls.

Can I Register Multiple Computers on ResNet?
Yes. You can register two computers on ResNet. Each computer you register should have it's own unique hardware address corresponding to the Ethernet card inside the machine.

What Do I Need To Get Connected?
You need a computer that meets the minimum requirements, an Ethernet card and an Ethernet cable. More detailed information on this question can be found in the Getting Started.

Do I Need a NIC If I Have a Modem?
Yes you do need a Network Interface Card (NIC) in order to use ResNet. The University ResNet system uses Ethernet which requires Ethernet cards and Ethernet cables. Which differs from a typical dial-up network which require modems and a phone line.

What Kind of NIC Should I Buy?
Any Ethernet card should work as long as the card is 10BaseT and has a RJ45 connection (i.e. an RJ45 connector looks like a slightly larger phone cable).

How Do I Find My Hardware Address?
Follow the instructions in the connection process.

Can I Use AOL on ResNet?
Yes you can use AOL and instant messenger using ResNet. In the configuration window inside AOL/Instant Messenger select LAN or T1 instead of modem.

Can I Run a Server from My Room?
Yes you can run a server from your room. Before setting up your server be sure to read the guidelines and responsibilities of being a server administrator.

How Many Ports Are in a Room?
ResNet has a "port per pillow" meaning the number of students in a room is equivalent to the number of ResNet ports in that room (i.e. 2 people = 2 ports, 1 person = 1 port).
